STOCKING YOUR PIGGIE
MEDICINE CHEST
Just as your medicine chest is stocked with needed band-aids
and ointments, it is good to have one for your guinea pig as
well.  As we all know from experience, emergencies usually
arise when we least expect them.  It is almost certain we will
never be prepared for everything, but it is helpful to have on
hand supplies for the minor ones.
BETADINE OINTMENT:    A wonderful antibiotic that works better
than Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic.  Used to put on toenails that were
cut too short, bite wounds, cuts or other things that have a possibility
of infection.

STYPTIC POWDER:  Used to stop blood flow, especially if you cut
toenails too short.

*HYDROGEN PEROXIDE:  For flushing out wounds or removing
urine stains from the coat.

*CANOLA  OIL:  Used to soften impactions.

VITAMIN E OIL:  Used to rub on dry, scaly skin or red, sore feet,
(the rubbing motion helps circulation).

TERRAMYCIN OINTMENT:  An antibiotic used for eye infections.

*IMMODIUM AD (liquid form):  This can be given for diarrhea,
but it only treats the symptom, it does not treat the cause.

*LITTLE TUMMIES (SIMETHICONE):  To get rid of gas because
it causes such incredible pain for them, especially Enteritis.

VITAMIN C (chewable tablets):  Quarter one whole tablet and
feed one quarter to the sick pig to prevent scurvey.

*PEDIALYTE:  For pups that are not doing well on hot days, or
adults that have a bout of diarrhea or other illness that keeps them
from drinking, or elderly that are not drinking very well or look like they
need a little extra fluid.

*BABY FOOD:   It would be a great idea to have a jar of carrots,
applesauce, bananas or yogurt (it comes in a jar on the shelf) that
the sick pig can be given.

HEATING PAD:  To keep the guinea pig warm in case of low body
temperature.  You will be able to tell because he will be cool to the
touch.

KITCHEN SCALE:  To weigh your guinea pig to make sure he is
not losing weight or for proper dosing of medication.

SYRINGE:  For administering liquid medications, to get an accurate
dose.

EYEDROPPER:  For feeding a sick guinea pig or giving crushed up
meds mixed with apple juice.

COTTON SWABS:  Used to clean out impactions, or to apply
ointments to open wounds, or to apply vitamin E oil to dry ears or skin.
